Lailatul Qadr: A Night of Blessings or Just Another Night in Nigeria?

Do We Truly Understand the Power of Lailatul Qadr?

Lailatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Majesty, is one of the most special nights in Islam. It is the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Allah says in the Qur’an:

"The Night of Qadr is better than a thousand months." (Qur’an 97:3)

It is a night filled with blessings, mercy, and divine peace. But in Nigeria, will we experience it as a truly spiritual night, or will it pass as just another ordinary night because of the conflicts among scholars and their followers?

Why Are Scholars and Awliyā’ Fighting?

                                                                                           (Ads)

Sadly, in Nigeria today, many Muslims focus more on arguments and disagreements between scholars and Awliyā’ (the Friends of Allah) instead of seeking knowledge and spiritual growth. Some scholars only focus on the literal meaning of the Qur’an, while others emphasize the deeper spiritual meanings.

This has led to division, with people taking sides instead of uniting for the sake of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned us about division:

“The people before you were divided into many sects. This Ummah will also be divided, but only one group will be on the right path.”

(Abu Dawood 4597)

Instead of preparing for Lailatul Qadr with sincere hearts, many people are busy spreading conflicts and debates. How can we expect Allah’s blessings when our hearts are filled with hatred?

What Happens on Lailatul Qadr?

Allah describes this night as a night of peace:

"Peace! It lasts until the break of dawn."

 (Qur’an 97:5)

The angels, led by Jibrīl (Gabriel), descend with blessings and divine commands. But if we continue to fight and argue, will we truly experience this peace? Great scholars like Imam Ghazali and Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani taught that Lailatul Qadr is not just about prayers but about changing our hearts for the better.

A Message to Nigerian Muslims

We must stop spreading conflicts and focus on unity. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“The believers are like one body; if one part is in pain, the whole body feels it.”

(Sahih Muslim 2586)

If we continue fighting among ourselves, we may miss the true blessings of Lailatul Qadr.

Instead of wasting time on arguments, let us seek Allah’s mercy, forgive one another, and use this night to grow spiritually.

Final Words

O people of Nigeria, do we really understand the power of Lailatul Qadr?

Will we use this night to get closer to Allah, or will we allow ignorance and division to take it away from us? If we do not stop fueling conflicts between scholars, we may not witness the real blessings of this holy night.

May Allah guide us to unity, wisdom, and the true blessings of Lailatul Qadr.
